Following a trip to Tesco’s where children collected the ingredients they needed for making pancakes, the children enjoyed a delicious pancake feast they made themselves on the morning of 13th February. This day marks the beginning of Lent for the Christian faith. Traditionally pancakes were eaten on this day because the four ingredients may actually represent the four pillars of the Christian faith – four as ‘the staff of life’, eggs as the ‘creation’, milk as ‘purity’ and salt as ‘wholesomeness’.
We talked about the ingredients, the process and the textures. The children talked about their favourite fillings, the importance of measurements in baking and the importance of hygiene.
